More from Malaysia

Today we were in Penang. We enjoyed a private tour around the city. Our driver convinced us to try a few things we didn’t really want to do but they turned out to be great experiences. We started by touring an area that is built on stilts in the water. Some commercial but lots of residential. A very old area of Georgetown. From there Mark (our driver) found a store i was looking for – more art supplies. We walked along a lovely area that had art murals. Enjoyed a few temples and a mansion and visited a Buddhist Temple – with the fourth largest sleeping Buddha in the world. We visited a botanical garden and then went to test some coffee (not really something we wanted to do as it was so hot outside). In the end we were glad we went to test the coffee as it was so cool inside and the coffee samples were great. After the coffee he took us to a giant food court (the other thing that didn’t really appeal to us – but glad we did it). He helped us to order a small plate of Penang fried noodles. It was actually quite tasty. Tomorrow we start a couple of sea days to Sri Lanka. Just a note wifi is a little patchy as we travel this area of the world and the Indian Ocean – has something to do with India. I will try to post but might be a few days.

Matrimonial bed in the Mansion. This bed was used on the wedding night – at the bottom of the bed there was a small wicker cage with a live rooster and a hen. These were placed under the bed before they went to bed and in the morning they would be freed from the cage If the rooster came out first they believed the couple would have a boy and if the hen came out a girl.
